Really important question was raised by one of my year 8 students today during our discussion on sustainability, pollution, the impact of litter on the local ecosystems and the impact we are having on the world.
“Sir… why are we only just finding out about these problems now? I’ve never known about these issues before. Why are people still polluting? Can’t they see what’s happening?”
She wasn’t the only one who had no idea the impact we are having on the world around us. Then she said
“People only care if they can see right in front of them or if its happening to them. How do we make people care about something if it hasn’t happened yet or not happening to them?”
She is 12.
