Teaching Science on the fly

For my prac teachers I’ve started to create a little Science Teachers Emergency Kit… Just a little pencil case with some essentials to explore the science around us at a moments notice …

Things I try to include in the Henstock Science Survival Kit…

  • Pencil / Pen / Mini ruler / Eraser
  • Pack of whiteboard markers (different colours)
  • Mini note pad
  • Laser Pointer (legal)
  • Small triangular glass prism and a rectangular glass prism
  • Magnet(s)
  • String
  • Magnifying Glass
  • Small zip lock bags
  • Old film canister
  • Copper wire
  • Batteries
  • Some LEDs
  • Some Chalk
  • Mini compass (magnetic)
  • Paper clips
  • Rubber Band(s)
  • Matches
  • Paddle POP sticks
  • Mini Candle
  • Marble(s)
  • Tissues
  • Mini Scissors
  • Post it notes
  • Protractor
  • Mini mirror

I’ve been able to get all of the above in stores like Eclipse, Australian Geographic, E-bay, J-Car, $2 shops etc for not too expensive.

This combined with the plethora of apps on your phone and other things you can get your hands on around the house or environment would hopefully allow a spontaneous science lesson to occur anywhere with little prep.

If you were to make a Science Survival kit, what would you put in it?
